Question for written answer  E-001943/2023
to the Commission
Rule 138

Global warming threatens balance on our planet. It has caused the extreme climate events Europe has been experiencing – heatwaves, severe droughts and floods and disruption to the seasons – which have serious implications for the health and economy of the people of Europe. Europe was also the first economy to commit to climate neutrality by 2050 and is taking firm steps towards that goal. Data recently published by Eurostat, however, shows that some countries are heading in the wrong direction, despite their Governments’ claims to the contrary. CO2 emissions from energy usage are one of the main drivers of global warming and represent 75 % of all human-induced greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. Portugal, for example, has seen an unfortunate 9.9 % rise in emissions from energy consumption, making it the country with the second-highest rise in emissions.

In view of this:

1.Does the Commission know what is behind this almost 10 % jump in Portugal’s emissions?2.What steps is the Commission taking with the Government to get Portugal back on track?
