Biogas plant developer and operations specialist Future Biogas will facilitate the temporary storage of 200,000 mt of liquified CO2 annually by mid-2025, followed by up to 400,000 mt by the end of 2028.
This carbon is a by-product of anaerobic digestion plants across the UK — that utilise energy crops from a regenerative farming system — and will be processed at the Future Biogas-operated facilities.
Future Biogas will transport liquified carbon to Saltend using trucks.
The liquid carbon will be then shipped via Saltend’s jetty onto specially designed vessels for transportation to the Northern Lights Carbon Capture and Underground Storage project, which is supported by the Norwegian Government and is under construction.
Px Group will be involved in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the infrastructure at Saltend, and potentially the storage site. The development now goes into Front End Engineering Design stage.
An investment by Future Biogas is not being disclosed, yet Saltend Chemicals Park’s spokesperson said it is “worth multiple tens of millions of pounds”.
Equinor in January signed a series of provisional offtake agreements for hydrogen from its planned Hydrogen to Humber, or H2H, project in Saltend. The project will provide low-carbon hydrogen to multiple industries in Humberside by 2026.
