Question for written answer E-003474/2022/rev.1
to the Commission
Rule 138
Manon Aubry (The Left)
According to reports in the newspaper Mediapart, despite being France’s number one business airline having run almost 5 000 flights in 2021, Valljet paid nothing into the European carbon market. It did, however, declare (after the deadline) that it had produced 12 890 tonnes of CO2, which is 1 430 times the annual carbon footprint of an average French citizen.
In addition, Valljet has reportedly set up a twin company, Thalair, in order to transfer some of its flights there and thus remain below the legal emission threshold beyond which Valljet would be obliged to pay for its emissions on the carbon market.
1.Can the Commission say how such avoidance of the EU carbon offset mechanism was possible and how much Valljet will have to pay for its emissions in 2021?2.Is Valljet allowed to split its activities in two in order to avoid paying for its emissions on the European carbon market?3.Does the Commission intend to fix this legal loophole whereby businesses can get around their payment obligations by dividing their aircraft between multiple companies?
